Realistic Birds by Gamma-Wings Realistic Birds by Gamma-Wings
I don't like drawing realism and I find it boring in general... so I just put the remaining pictures onto one big canvas. Don't expect much realism from me in the future, especially since these were done in February of last year. So, let this serve as proof that I can do realism and can likely do better today... but I simply choose not to.

Bald Eagle- February 8th 2015
Barn Swallow- February 14th 2015
Red-headed Woodpecker- February 15th 2015 (my personal favourite)
King Rail- February 16th 2015

I guess I'm also capable of doing a full on realistic picture in a period of a day, huh. Well digital painting IS my go to when I want to draw something that looks good in a shorter period of time. Line art is a hassle and I save it for my "bigger" pictures illustrating my story which take a lot longer to do.

You might not like drawing them but these are 110% awesome AAA art material! The attention to detail in these are amazing; favorite one is the barn swallow; love the intricate details on the primaries and secondaries.

I love these birds, the barn swallow and red-headed woodpecker are my favourites. The realism of feathers is eye candy, the colours are pleasant looking so vivid and bright, the eyes seems so alive, especially red-headed woodpecker's eye. This reminds me of field guides, which is great because i love field guides. I like drawing realism, it relaxes me but the only part i don't like about it is colouring, this is my weak point, i have to find inspiration to colour if i want to finish a work and i don't always have time and will to colour it, so it ends up being unfinished D:

Their poses and compilation are reminiscent of field guides. It reminds me of when you were drawing a guide to the birds of the world. It's interesting to see parts of your style translated into realism.

A completely nice collection of realistic birds! I have to say that you're the master in such things. You always get the anatomy right and you really nailed it at the coloration. They're looking very realistic especially with your lineless style. My personal pic was the king rail - you drew it very realistically with those plumage details and feet anatomy. And also I love the details of the plumage of the red-headed woodpecker that you drew here. It looks completely realistic and believable. The barn swallow looks very amazing with those lighting and shading on its plumage. And lastly - the bald eagle. It looks completely amazing, badass, and of course - looks that it's about to give some freedom! :XD:

Thank you very much! I'm glad you like the woodpecker, I'm happy with how he turned out. Yes it definitely is tedious, takes a lot of time and attention to detail. It is boring for sure, some people likely enjoy it but my brain craves far more creativity and freedom when it comes to art. Certainly no room for expressions and style.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked my other ones too. Yes they do take quite a bit of will power to complete, hence why I've never done a lot.

You do get the style of a commercial book about books pretty well, as those drawings have a similar style as those you see in guides about animals. And I mean the higher quality ones. Though, I would agree that realism is just the copy of reality and thus not possible to reflect the own personality of the artist themselves all that well like stylized drawings that have their own looks to work with.

Thank you, I was going for that field guide look so glad I succeeded. As a kid I used to look up to field guide artists, at least the good ones. The poorer ones I looked down upon... thinking that I can do better. And though I'm not sure that's the case back then, I can certainly create much better artwork than many nowadays. A shame I find it so boring to do.
Yea that's definitely true, it aims to copy reality but we already have photos for that. It does not reflect the artist themselves. I much prefer stylized art; it reflects the artist and their creativity far better. Though, I can understand drawing realistic mythological creatures... as they don't exist and it's neat having a representation of how they might really look like.

Well, making something real that isn't has something to it that a regular copy of your vision (as in what yyou physically see) has not, I would say. In the end however, what counts is that is looks good and can evoke joy or awe in the viewer. Or amusement, depending on the aim.

Oh I agree with that, there is definitely a difference between being good and enjoying something. Thanks, I know that I'm capable of doing realism but yes I simply don't enjoy doing it. There's no real room for creativity. Yes, stylizing is more fun I agree. I too admire the skill of realism artists, sometimes I'm even amazed by it, but their art never holds my attention long enough for me to want more. Stylized artwork is a lot more fun, and yes does showcase the artist better. I also prefer art to have some back story to it. That often makes me want to come back for more, as obviously the art has some continuity and if it's a good story I'll want to see more.

I definitely agree with you on art that has a story to it. It's so intriguing, and sometimes you see the picture in an entirely different light once you hear about the story. Sometimes I see an epic picture with no description, and it makes me burn to know the story behind what's happening.

Woah these are very well done, they look like they belong in a bird guide book or something along those lines.
I completely agree with how realism tends to be boring, but still good job friend!

Thank you very much, I'm glad to hear they look like those illustrations in field guides. It brings me right back when I used to draw stuff like that constantly (when I was 11 or 12).
Yea it really is though. :XD: Thank you, glad you like it!

These birds turns out very nice, I love the way you drew their eyes. It really looks like that they're alive in the image.

I understand, realism are super time consuming. That magpie art took me more than two full days to finish.

Thank you very much! I'm happy to hear they look alive here, as that's what I try to do when drawing eyes. Give them a spark of life.

Yea it definitely is. I'm not surprised it took you that much time to draw your magpie pic.

Those are gorgeous.  I think the eagle and the woodpecker are my favorites.  I haven't seen a Red-Headed woodpecker like that one since moving south.  We had one come to our feeder in Indiana all the time, but we don't have them in NC or at least not where I live.  I love the eagle too, but I love raptors anyway.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you like those, I find it interesting how everyone has their own faves. I've never seen one, though hope to eventually. They don't live here so no opportunity to see them unless I go somewhere. That's cool you had them visit your feeder, must have been lovely. Thanks, yea I love raptors too. Among my favourite bird species.
